In this techno-savvy age we live in, where most people are familiar with working on computers, the world of 3D computer aided design can still be a daunting proposition for a lot of people. Choosing and using the most suitable software package is a considerable investment and getting it wrong can hinder both the beginner and the more advanced user. CAD software users have individual needs and required outcomes - one package doesn't suit all.

The world of CAD is our area of expertise - simply call us and we'll steer you in the right direction.

On a personal note, we had a wedding in the Realtime ranks recently. It was an extremely happy event with an interesting bonus. A group of friends on one side of Australia were not able to visit sunny Cairns to partake in the celebrations. Thanks to some techno-savvy family members, a laptop, wireless broadband, and a webcam, the Broome crowd enjoyed the real thing in "real-time" across the country. See our section on Other Good Stuff for the full story.

AUTOCAD & REVIT NEWS

Revit Content

A lot of Revit content is right under our noses (nosii?). Navigate to Revit's Metric Library and in there you will find a folder called Sample Files. This folder contains 6 Revit projects, each containing dozens of examples of System Families (roofs, stairs, railings) and a collection of useful repeating details. Here you can find a dutch gable, or dormer window, or repeating 2D roof tiles for you to copy or import.

And here is an excellent tutorial on creating a Revit Family 2D people silhouette from Sketchup.

Plus don't forget Autodesk's on-line Revit Content Library.

Cairns Revit User Group (CRUG for short!)

Don't forget the Cairns' user network for Revit Architecture meets on the last Tuesday of each month. Click here to register your interest in participating with the Group.

AutoCAD

Jay Leno (famous US TV host, like Kochie), uses AutoCAD in the restoration of his vintage motorcar collection, so says Autodesk's resident historian, Shaan Hurley.

AutoCAD Architecture

Those amongst us with 64 bit computers will breathe a sigh of relief - AutoCAD Architecture 2009 is available in both 32 and 64 bit versions.

On another matter, if you encounter an error regarding an absence of "Native Values" when importing an AutoCAD Architecture published DWF or DWFx file into another Autodesk product, then here is the solution: Native Values Hotfix.

VISTA

Vista 64? Piece of cake…

A recent foray into the land of 64 bit Vista on a new Dell XPS laptop resulted in an interesting and full Sunday's work for Dale. As most readers would be aware, life on the b'leading edge of technology can bring tears to the most stoic. Vista Ultimate 64 SP1 is an awesome piece of software, with much bad press, but Dale thought "It's a new computer, how hard can it be?"

Well, finding 64 bit drivers for every device in the computer (over 30 believe it or not), including the newly released dual 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M graphics cards, proved a challenge. However the day ended well with the discovery of an excellent product called "Driver Detective".

This software found all devices in the laptop (sound, mic, video, DVD, etc), examined the installed drivers, advised their status (out of date, missing, ok, etc), and provided automated downloads as required. It was a true godsend, and to be found, downloaded, installed, purchased (PayPal), and unlocked, on a Sunday, for $41...

Very highly recommended: DriverDetective.

Microsoft says Vista cost a lot to make

BusinessWeek estimates it took 10,000 employees about five years to ship Vista. In an interview with Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, the interviewer asked if he had added up how much money it cost to develop Vista. He laughed, "I can't say I have. It would be impossible to count up... I'm sure it's a lot".

If we assume Microsoft's costs per employee are about $200,000 a year, the estimated payroll costs alone for Vista hover around $10 billion. That is a stack of US dollar bills over 1,000kms high, or 22 Space Shuttle missions, or...

"I had high expectations and they were met. The course has been what I've needed to start implementation in the workplace." Doug, Trinity Anglican School.
