Is the media starting to drive you crazy with the constant focus on "doom and gloom"? Well you wouldn't be Robinson Crusoe.

In the Chinese written language, the symbol for 'crisis' is a combination of the symbols for 'danger' plus 'opportunity.' Alan Cohen writes "If you have been distracted by the quest for money or trapped by your business, take this 'opportunity' to refocus on people you care about and activities that truly bring you joy. If you end up being truer to values that fulfil you, this 'crisis' will have served you well.

The two greatest architectural achievements of the twentieth century, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Empire State Building were funded and constructed at the height of the depression - a visionary thrives under all conditions. Don't wait for the economy to get back on its feet before you can be happy. The economy you will see tomorrow will be the result of the attitudes and actions you think and do today. Find happiness right where you stand, and you will be the richest person in the world."

Until December, enjoy being a free spirit in a complicated world...

AUTOCAD & REVIT NEWS

Free Revit Utilities

With Revit's API (Application Programming Interface) improving with every new release, we are starting to see utilities developed to turn our daily work into fun, fun, fun. Here are some links to free utilities from Avatech, a company specialising in developing Revit tools.

Room Renumber
  • Easily renumber existing rooms into an order defined by selection.

  • Insert rooms into an existing series of rooms with the subsequent room numbers "shifted" to make space for the inserted one.

  • NEW: Handle increments between room numbers.
Click here to download (Tip: enter any US state to proceed)

Change Case
  • Instantly match your company's or client's standards on naming with either UPPER CASE, Title Case, or lower case.

  • This tool scans your model and automatically fixes "case issues" to whatever standard you specify.

  • NEW: Support for new element/parameter combinations (Text Note Text, View Title on Sheet)
Click here to download (Tip: enter any US state to proceed)

Door Mark Update

Make door marks refer to the room that the door swings into.

  • Interrogates all doors and rooms to determine the proper mark for each door.

  • Enables you to inspect and override the suggested marks and updates the marks.

  • NEW: Provides user-specified suffixes where a room has more than one door (works with Revit 2009 only).

  • NEW: Swap the door TO/FROM definition to match the door swing.
Click here to download (Tip: enter any US state to proceed)

AutoCAD 2009 - Dynamic Blocks

For those who are yet to delve into Dynamic Blocks, this feature is possibly the most significant enhancement to AutoCAD since dimensions were added as an extra-cost option in version 1.2 (1983). 2D and 3D blocks can be programmed to behave in predetermined ways depending on the users editing actions. Classic examples are toilet cubicles that array as the object is stretched, or a table that sprouts additional chairs as it is stretched in length. Here is a link to a tutorial by Ellen Finkelstein that builds a very useful architectural door in plan view. Click here.

A couple of tricks to keep in mind when creating Dynamic Blocks:

  • They lose their "dynamic" properties if they are not scaled uniformly.
This is logical if you think about it.

  • If Attributes are part of your block, make sure that the Attribute property "Lock Position" is set to yes. Otherwise the Attribute will not move with your dynamic changes.

TRAINING COURSES

We know that learning by doing is the fastest, most cost-effective way to acquire new skills. Realtime International training combines the benefits of small class size with industry instructor led demonstrations and hands-on reinforcement in our own dedicated training facility away from the inevitable interruptions and distractions in the workplace.

One-on-one tuition is invaluable

Once you're out of the classroom and drawing "in the real world", things can sometimes become daunting, confusing and just down right frustrating. Our suggestion is to make a list as you work of all the things you struggle with; all the things you think the software should be doing for you; all the things you want to achieve having invested in CAD software.

Then call us to sit with one of our instructors and receive focused attention on your specific needs.
