President's Report |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Finally, we've said goodbye to the cyclone
season for the year; not that it seemed
particularly active for cyclones - we just
had a gulf-load of rain dumped on both sides
of the Great Divide. So now, we turn to
winter - not the cold, damp, dreary weather
associated with the northern hemisphere |
 |
|
| |
where you rug up and stay indoors, but the
glorious warm sunny days and cool evenings
that gets you out and about doing things -
invigorating stuff!
And that's just what the Cairns Chamber of
Commerce hopes to be providing for members -
some invigorating stuff - encapsulated in the
seminar series "Building
Business in all Weather".
In the first instance, the Cairns Chamber of
Commerce is seeking expressions of interest
from members to help run a particular
session in their area of expertise - all the
details can be found
here.
Once we have selected the session
presenters, the Cairns Chamber of Commerce
will be hosting the seminars over the next
five months - so keep an eye out for more
details each month. Likely there'll be a
session or two that captures your interest,
so hopefully we'll see you there.
As a bit of background, it's worth pointing
out that the Cairns Chamber of Commerce has
had "Building Business" as its tagline for a
year or two - while it plays an important
role in advocating on behalf of the region
more generally, the Cairns Chamber of
Commerce is working harder than ever to meet
the needs of its members. In the current
economic climate, we have seen and heard of
the need for more business support and
education initiatives - and this ties in
with the "in
all Weather" series.
That is not to say it's all doom and gloom
out there - in fact, far from it - I hear of
many businesses that are "up on last year",
and perhaps the odd typical understatement
"no complaints".
The Federal budget will be the one to watch
though - a defining moment for the year and
hopefully, one that sees us through to a
period of renewed growth, backed by
responsible spending on infrastructure and
other employment generating initiatives. No
doubt with a dose of belt-tightening as well
- it won't all be positive.
We might yet pull through this together
relatively unscathed, maybe even in better
shape. Make sure your business gets out and
about and enjoy the opportunities to be had
- it'll prove more invigorating than
huddling in the corner.
Regards,
Jeremy Blockey

President,
Sarah Powell |
|
Young Chamber have uncovered a
conspiracy!
Behind closed doors, a network of
secret societies masquerading as
professional development conferences
is holding young business people
hostage, forcing them to drink cup
after cup of tepid coffee that
tastes like dam water, to keep them
awake while their senses are
assaulted by seemingly endless
monotone seminars, in dull
windowless rooms. The detainees
shift impatiently in their chairs,
willing the end to come… But
death by PowerPoint is slow.
Ok so I may have used a little
poetic license there (surely not
all professional development
conferences can be tarred with the
boredom |
|
brush?) but I'm guessing most of us
have been to one of these
lack-of-concentration-camps at some
stage in life!
Young Chamber have formulated a plot to
eradicate the secret society, one
professional development conference at a
time. Starting… now!
On 29 July 2009 Young Chamber are launching
the
Next Gen Expo. This one-day
intensive program includes guest mentors,
workshops and break out sessions, in which
well recognised personalities will impart
their knowledge and experience to an
audience of aspiring leaders, students,
small business owners and the Gen Y
workforce of Tropical North Queensland. The
format of the day allows attendees to
customise their day by selecting sessions
that best suit their individual needs.
The
Next Gen Expo is a learning odyssey that
isn't just about professional education, but
real life lessons. A key objective for this
event is to encourage people to recognise
their full potential and apply it to the
amazing opportunities that exist in our
region.
Next Gen Expo attendees will be entertained,
they will be educated and they will be
challenged. Young Chamber have high
expectations of attendees to stop waiting
for career/business/life to start, and make
it happen. We pledge to send your staff back
to your office re-energised, inspired and
motivated to reach new heights.
If you're nodding your head as you're
reading this, here's a call to action: why
not demonstrate the vital role that you are
willing to play in the development of the
next generation of business leaders in our
community, by coming onboard as an
Event
Partner.
Sure, you get a lot out of this as a sponsor
- for example the opportunity to provide a
mentor from your own company for one of the
40 minute sessions that are up for grabs -
but what the Next Generation get out of this
is what is really important.
Follow this link now to find out more about
the Next Gen Expo and
learn how your
business can be a part of it.
Cheers
Sarah

1939 - 1948: Did You Know?
Mr. Fogarty continued to head the
Chamber in 1939 when work began on the Kuranda Range Road;
the Far North's abandoned copper fields were again being
worked and a trial power alcohol plant was established in
the north. The original "Black
Friday" in Victoria was January 13, when 71 people lost
their lives following days of devastating bush fires. More
than 1,000 homes and millions of hectares of forest were
destroyed. Read more on the
1939 - 1948 decade of Cairns and the Cairns Cairns Chamber

current economic climate we wish to offer
members an insight on how to improve or
safeguard their business.

Development/Promotional Charge by
Cairns Regional Council
Cairns Chamber of Commerce has been
part of a group working with Cairns
Regional Council on the option of a
development/promotional charge being
introduced to support the broader
economic development of the area,
including tourism promotion.
The introduction of a tourism levy
has received a great deal of media
coverage in the last three weeks.
The matter was discussed at some
length by members at our April
lunch. To assist Cairns Chamber of
Commerce in determining our position
and preferred options we are asking
for your assistance and direction by
filling out a short survey. A link
to the survey was sent to members
last week. If you haven't responded
to the survey yet, you have until
5:00pm on Tuesday 12 May. Below is
the link to the survey.
Development/Promotional Charge

We will report back to you in next
month's Members News on the results
of the survey. |

School of
Business Marketing & E-Business
Projects
James Cook
University School of Business and
the Cairns Chamber of Commerce have
again combined to develop an
opportunity for Bachelor of Business
students to work with local
industry. The program involves
third-year students engaging with
local businesses on marketing and
e-business projects.
At the
completion of the project,
participating businesses will
receive a report outlining the
findings of the research as it
relates to your business. All
intellectual property generated by
the project remains the property of
the participating business.
This program
seeks to deliver benefits to local
businesses and students, providing
students with practical experience
to develop their skills while
delivering fresh ideas to
businesses.
Please download
the
Project Overviews document for
more information including the
commitment required from
participating businesses and the
students.
This initiative
proved very popular in 2008 with far
more interest received than was able
to be accommodated by the students. If
you are interested in becoming
involved please download the
Expression of Interest Form and
return it to
judith@cairnschamber.com.au - or
fax your form to 07 4031 0883. |
