YC Chair:
Sarah Powell |
|
I'm one of those social outcasts who
hasn't got a
Facebook profile. I won't go
into my reasons why - honestly,
they're just not that interesting.
What IS interesting though, is the
multitude of uses for
Facebook and how
Young Chamber plans to make the
most of them!
Isn't it remarkable that this
website - developed five short years
ago with the intention of digitally
mapping social networks - has
snowballed into a multi-faceted
platform that now has over 175
million users worldwide, is
available in 35 languages and is
used for around 3 billion minutes
each day. |
|
No that's not a typo, I'll say it
again: people are on
Facebook for 3 billion minutes a
day.
While some businesses have barred
the website from being used on staff PC's, others have embraced the free
technology and are making it work
for them.
And really, what organisation
wouldn't want a slice of that action
if there was a productive
application for it? Oh wait a
minute, there is!
Mark 2009 down in your calendar as
the year the YC evolved from the old
fashioned variety of professional
development and networking (yawn),
beyond the sexy website (www's are
like, so yesterday), to the era of
virtual integration (:D).
YC has implemented a bold new
strategy to leverage off the most
powerful social networking tool of
our generation - we want our message
to reach more people and we've
decided to let
Facebook do the hard yakka for
us!
Facebook
is a great medium for YC members and
contacts to follow up and stay in touch with
people they've met at our events. YC
recognises that we need to be doing whatever
we can to facilitate business opportunities,
promote activity and encourage growth and
development, all of which are vital to keep
us moving forward in these turbulent times.
By popular demand, YC has established a
Facebook
group where you will find information on all
of our latest initiatives; have the
opportunity to provide YC with feedback or
suggestions; upload your photos from our
events; even introduce your own contacts to
us or invite them to participate in our
activities.
So, what are you waiting for?
If you're
already on
Facebook,
search for 'Young Chamber Cairns'. If you're
not there yet, never fear, our YC mailing
list will soon receive an email containing
the relevant link if you want to check it
out.
Facebook:
love it or loath it, just consider the
potential first.
See you on the flip side.

Centenary Celebrations: 1919
- 1928 |

1919 - 1928: Did You Know?
In 1919, Mr McManus was
still the Chamber's head as all shipping in and out of
Cairns came to a standstill for three months, when seamen
took national strike action. The economic future of Cooktown
seemed grim when a fire swept through the business district
destroying most of the major buildings.
Expanding facilities catering for an increasing number of
tourists visiting the Far North was high on the agenda, as
was addressing what the city perceived was a general apathy
being shown around the region by the southeast corner of the state.
A severe tropical storm on March 10, demolishing most of
Innisfail and Babinda, caused severe damage in Cairns,
Ingham and Cardwell, and claimed 17 lives.
The city sadly marked the passing in 1928 of Mr
Draper, the Chamber's highly respected president
who was also Mayor at the time - an office he had filled
periodically for 10 years. He left an estate valued at more
than 50,000 pounds, which was a considerable fortune at that
time, and was fondly regarded as one of the city's true
founding fathers. Read more on the
1919-1928 decade of Cairns and the Cairns Chamber of Commerce on

Images and Footage Sought - 1980's |
 |
|
| |
|
|

Do you have any images portraying the region
as it was known in the 1980's? If so, the
Chamber would be extremely grateful if we
could view these images for potential use in
our centenary book and DVD.

PNG
Presentation |
 |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Last month we enjoyed an excellent
presentation from the Port Moresby
Chamber on what is happening in
Papua New Guinea, including their
resources and gas projects.
The Port
Moresby Chamber are very upbeat
about the next 12 - 18 months. Major
gas projects and a considerable
amount of commercial construction
work in Port Moresby are
demonstrations of the positive
future.
Predictions
of 8% growth are heartening to see.
So much so, the Cairns Chamber will
be taking a group of members to Port
Moresby to develop these
opportunities further. |
|
 |
|
A copy of the presentation is
available on the
Chamber website and can be
downloaded directly
here (file size warning for
direct download - 5MB).
Our two Chambers have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding, which
is really both of us agreeing to
support our members in securing
business. |

Working
Through the Tough Times |
 |
| |
|
|
| |
|
The Chamber will be offering
a number of free seminars to
you on working through tough times.
We will be calling for
Expressions of Interest later
this month for those members capable
of delivering these seminars. If you
have any suggestions on particular
topics,
please let us know.
It is during the times when the
going gets tough that we all
need to work together. The events we
have planned for 2009 will present
you with an ideal opportunity to
build local relationships as well as
hear about innovative ideas to
streamline your business. |

|
|
| |
|
Erica Peebles (pictured right) has decided to leave the Chamber and
move on to new endeavours.
Many of you will know
Erica as the smiling face at the registration desk
of our events, or the welcome voice on the phone
when you call the Chamber.
Erica joined the Chamber in 2007 as a Trainee and
has progressed to be a valuable member of our team.
We wish Erica all the best in the future. She will
be sorely missed.

We would like to welcome to
the Chamber team Roxy Voyce (pictured right) who will be taking over
the Administration role from Erica.

recently settling down in Cairns.
Roxy is excited

Dengue - Check the Work Space |
 |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
Dengue Fever Outbreak: Update
There are
now 582 confirmed cases of dengue
fever (5/2/09) in Cairns, with over
20 suburbs affected. In Townsville,
there are 71 dengue fever cases
confirmed and 4 suburbs affected.
Other areas
that have confirmed dengue cases
include Port Douglas (3), Yarrabah
(2), Injinoo (1) & Innisfail (1).
Due to the current outbreaks, we
encourage you to adopt the following
measures in your workplace to
protect your staff, clients and
neighbours:
1. Ensure that your workplace is
free of potential mosquito breeding
sites.
Specific
potential breeding sites that need
to be dealt with are: |
|
 |
|
i) Containers: Throw out stagnant
water from (or just throw out) pot
plant bases, buckets, tarpaulins,
palm fronds, boats, flower vases,
old tyres, and any other container
that can hold water.
ii) Roof gutters: Check that roof
gutters have not been clogged with
leaves and branches. Clear them to
ensure they do not breed mosquitoes.
iii) Gully traps/drains: Check any
drain sumps that may hold stagnant
water. Ensure they are clear of
debris and, where practical, fill
them with concrete to the bottom of
outlet pipes. This also reduces the
opportunity for mosquito breeding.
2. Apply
surface spray to dark and shady
areas in your workplace - for
instance under desks and cupboards.
If you are being bitten at your
workplace or in the field, make sure
you wear insect repellent during the
day and reapply as labelled.
There is no
simple way of preventing dengue
epidemics in North Queensland but we
encourage you to take these simple
steps. After all, none of us want to
have staff off work because they're
sick. |

At this time of the year we are all very conscious of the
weather and the impact of road closures. The vast majority
of our freight comes in and goes out by road. For those
wishing to check on road conditions and closures please
