President's Report

A happy and prosperous New Year to all for 2009!

With the Christmas break well and truly behind us, it is time to forge ahead in the New Year. Granted there are some uncertain times, but for the very large part, companies will remain open for business.

CAIRNS CHAMBER PRESIDENT - JEREMY BLOCKEY

So with that premise, get out there and do business. In this regard, my advice is simple - wherever possible, do business locally as, aside from keeping dollars flowing within the region, it will have a stimulatory effect as your business colleagues see things happening around them. The flip side to buying locally, nothing is worse than seeing a southern supplier secure a job when you know you could do the work.

The time is therefore ripe for you to sharpen the pencil, lift your level of service and nurture those relationships.

This is where the Chamber comes in - we will be providing a wide range of networking and information gathering opportunities, from our regular lunches, to our various taskforce activities; from the Young Chamber events, to our Centenary celebrations. And if you have other ideas worth pursuing, the Chamber may be able to assist - give the team at the Chamber office a call.

I  look forward to catching up with you all during the year.

Regards,

Jeremy Blockey
President

YOUNG CHAMBER PRESIDENT - SARAH POWELL

[GRAPHIC: YOUNG CHAMBER LOGO]

YC President: Sarah Powell

Q: What comes after 'Happy New Year!'?

A: Usually a hangover.

And it's not just the type of hangover that lurks in the bottom of a tequila bottle that you have to watch out for. For many, the hangover that follows a busy year in work or business is even worse, and can often take much longer to get over!

If you had a tough 2008, chances are the break over Christmas and New Years didn't quite recharge the batteries. If you're anything like me, you can't believe how fast the time went.

Now I'm not a morning person at the best of times, so you can imagine my complete dismay when I awoke to the shrill sound of my alarm clock on Monday morning this week, only to find that I was no longer on holiday. My first day back in the office? Dragging of feet doesn't even begin to describe it!

A visit to Dolce on the way to work though, and I had overcome the first hurdle (the transformation from Sardonic Sub-human into Economic Development Officer). Now it was time to face the real challenge: actually achieving something productive. It's a lot harder than it sounds, you know.

If you're still suffering from first day back blues (perhaps several days after your first day back), then you probably need something stronger than caffeine to get over it. Finding your motivation is pretty hard to do when the list of things requiring your attention seems insurmountable.

As they say though, you eat an elephant one bite at a time. So, here's a few ideas from the Young Ch@mber to give you a kick in the virtual pants.

First things first - close Facebook. You've had all holidays to play with that. And stop using that backlog of emails to procrastinate. They've waited this long, they can wait another hour!

Ok. Now identify an outstanding matter that is your responsibility, one that is relatively minor and highly achievable. Now DO IT! The sense of achievement at scratching something off of your To Do List (however small) is quite satisfying and in a way, generates some momentum.

Now, time to take a bigger bite.

Of those other things left to do, prioritise e.g. by deadline, most significant outcome for least cost or effort, or whatever works best for you. Put those quasi-tasks, that you've been using to procrastinate so far, right down the bottom of the list!

Now we're getting somewhere. Ok it's time for the most important step: before you start working on the task that you've identified as being your highest priority, give yourself a light at the end of the tunnel - something to work towards. For me, it's lunch out at a nice restaurant with friends.

Now it's time to sink your teeth into the proverbial elephant again and give that high priority task all of your attention and energy. Once you've completed the task, you can reward yourself. Repeat the above, but as the tasks become less significant, so do the rewards (until you're checking your emails again and rewarding yourself with stale Monte Carlo's!).

A private incentive scheme is a great hangover remedy. Of course it's not your traditional Berocca, greasy fast food and DVD combo, but it works just as well!

Centenary Celebrations - Pre 1909

Pre 1909 - Did You Know?

"Outspoken and hard headed businessman, Richard Kingsford, grandfather of famous aviator, Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, served with Daniel Patience and a small band of civic leaders on the town's Progress Association, which was the forerunner of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce.

From earliest times, there was cooperation and much interaction between the Progress Association, the Divisional Board and later between the Chamber and the Council. These organisations dealt with the highest levels of government of the day in their desire to improve the lot of Cairns and its citizenry.

Moves to form a Chamber flowed from a public meeting at the Hides and McCall hotel in May 1886. Among the urgent items on the agenda were:

- Dredging a deep channel access into Trinity Inlet to allow bigger cargo vessels to

 navigate the new port

- The impact of Chinese immigration

- Extension of much needed telegraph services in the area

- The completion of the Cairns to Tableland rail line, which began in 1881, and

pushing this through to Herberton.

With Mr Patience at the head and holding the dual role of Town Alderman, the Chamber experienced tumultuous times. During his productive years in Cairns, he served on the Justice roster of the Police Court, was elected Auditor of the Municipal Council, married Sarah Ann Chard, served as President of the School of Arts, and was elected Cairns Mayor in 1893 serving a one year term.

Prior to adopting it's 1909 constitution, the Cairns Chamber Of Commerce experienced several mercurial years and included amongst its notable chairs were French born architect and builder, Louis Severin, Callaghan Walsh (who was mayor in 1889), the colourful character, William Alexander Carpenter, James Lyons (Mayor, 1895) and Richard Tills (Mayor 1900, 1901 and 1907).

In its first 25 years the population of Cairns grew to 11,000 - of whom 20% were Chinese.

In 1903 Cairns was proclaimed a town and one year later got its first ambulance service."

Promotional Levy

A promotional levy has been in place in the former Douglas Shire for some time as well as the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. We will be keeping you informed as the concept becomes more defined.

Minister for Main Roads

Each quarter the Chamber meets with Hon Warren Pitt MP, Minister for Main Roads and Local Government. At our most recent meeting, the Minister outlined some of the road projects occurring in the region. These are:

Cardwell Range - the northern side of the range will undergo a significant upgrade. Planning is currently underway.

Tully - the southern approaches to Tully along the Bruce Highway have undergone major upgrades with a new road alignment that will reduce delays due to flooding. This is a significant step towards improving the overall flood immunity for the Bruce Highway and will reduce the number of days the Bruce Highway is cut due to flooding.

Mulgrave River Bridge - This project is well underway and is part of the flood immunity program of works on the Bruce Highway.

Southern Approach to Cairns - Additional lanes will be constructed between Edmonton and Ray Jones Drive including overpasses to improve traffic flows, particularly during peak times.

These projects will provide a healthy injection of jobs and funds into our local economy in coming months.

Cairns Base Hospital

Stakeholder Reference Group

The Chamber lodged an expression of interest for Jeremy Blockey to be a part of this group. This has been confirmed and the first meeting was held in December 2008.

Essentially the group's role is to ensure wide stakeholder engagement in the development of the Cairns Base Hospital upgrade.

It is fair to say that the actual planning for the redevelopment is still very much in the early stages. It was extremely pleasing to be part of the process at the beginning, rather than when the concepts have been well defined. We will be utilising our broad membership base to gain feedback on issues and to provide information on the upgrade.

JCU Honours Project

The Chamber allocates funds each year to support a JCU Honours student to undertake a project of relevance to the Chamber. The 2009 project will be "Perceptions of Users and Nonusers of the Cairns CBD". This project will provide valuable information for our CBD Taskforce.
