President's Report
Well, only a few more shopping days till
Christmas - it seems like it has crept up on
us this year with barely a Christmas tune
heard at shopping centres (relief) - or perhaps
I just haven't heard them because I've yet
to do that Christmas shopping!
|
| |
Granted, there's an unusual mood around
town: we've not felt the full effects of the
global crisis here in Cairns and for many,
it's business as usual - in fact I'm being
told by many business people that we're
busier than ever; on the other hand, there's
an eerie undertone that's making some people
nervous and curtailing some bigger ticket
spending.
So
what's the Chamber up to while all this is
happening? We've wound down on the
networking with our last big monthly lunch
for the year attracting 190 business people;
but planning is well under way for another
great series of speakers in the New Year -
keep your eye out for the first function in
February.
We've
achieved tremendous success in the mining
sector this year and despite some
instability in that sector at present, the
hard yards we've run over the past couple of
years will pay dividends with the bigger and
more secure operators who still want to do
business with Cairns - it may be a tougher
market in coming months, but at least we've
got their ear.
We've
continued to lead the debate on the state of
the CBD and aside from advocating for
improved beautification, lighting and
safety, this year we've put our money where
our mouth is by supporting the Council with
a couple of
Christmas Banners as part of the effort
to add more life into the shopping
experience at Christmas.
From a
personal point of view, I'm really looking
forward to a break from the heavy bout of
lobbying that we've been involved in this
year - from hospital upgrades to flight
downgrades, from roads to regional plans,
from airport sales to new seaport structures
- some substantial issues to tackle. One can
only imagine that an election year next year
will add a bit of spice to such endeavours!
So take
a deep breath, finish the year on a high by
meeting those targets and deadlines, take
some well-deserved time off over Christmas
with family and friends and be ready to come
back with renewed vigour and passion.
Have a
safe and merry Christmas and I look forward
to catching up with you all in the New Year.
Regards
Jeremy Blockey

YC President: Sarah Powell |
|
The month of December has arrived -
and we all know what this means:
school holidays, Christmas shopping,
heat and humidity - and the election
of Young Chamber committee members
of course!
Please join
me in welcoming the three newest
members of the
YC crew.
Andrea
Ambrosio is a senior management
consultant for
Outsource Management who is
highly regarded by colleagues and
peers alike. Andrea has earned the
respect of
YC through her proactive
approach to personal and
professional development, not just
for herself but also in mentoring
others. |
|
Karen Houlihan came to us from the
strong field of professionals at
Arup, but it was her extra curricular
activities that spoke volumes. Karen's
commitment to
Harald's House is a great example of her
value set, energy and motivation to give
something back to the community.
Scott Pearson
is a Senior Cost Manager with
Turner and Townsend, with ten years of
public and private sector construction
projects under his belt. As if that isn't
enough of an achievement in itself, he also
became a father last month - so we expect
he'll be a master at multitasking too!
Each of these
candidates demonstrated the ideal mix of
experience, professionalism and personality
that
the
YC values, and we're stoked to have
Andrea, Karen and Scott on board.
I'd like to say a
big thank you to all those who submitted an
expression of interest, for the obvious time
and effort they put into their applications.
It really was encouraging for us to see that
so many of you are keen to get involved in
the
Young Chamber.
Although we only had
three formal spaces available on the
committee,
YC will have working groups and task
force opportunities throughout the next
year. Please
contact the Chamber of Commerce office
to register your interest (if you haven't
already) and we'll keep you informed as
these opportunities arise.
Well folks, that's
about it from
YC for the year. It's been a
rollercoaster ride which we've thoroughly
enjoyed. We have a huge year planned for
2009 and we look forward to sharing this
with you.
See you on the
flip-side!
Sarah

Cairns Report Advertising
Now Open |
 |
| |
|
|
| |
Reminder: Expressions of interest to
advertise in our 2008 Cairns Report close on
Wednesday 17 December.
This regional
synopsis will include a review of regional
industries and business activities, as well
as highlights for the Chamber, and will be
presented with a selection of easy to read
facts and charts.
As a quality
presentation of facts, figures and
editorial, the 2008 Cairns Report (published
in March 2009) is anticipated to be the
pre-eminent resource for organisations to
promote their business and demonstrate why
Cairns is such a great place to trade.
The distribution
channels for the Report are expanded each
year, with the Chamber's formula being
duplicated by both Port Douglas and Mareeba
Chambers of Commerce, suggesting that it's a
winning one.
Advertisers have the
opportunity to take a range of advertising
packages.
Please register your
interest in advertising by sending an email
with your contact details to Trish Blackman
at
trishb@australiantouristpublications.com.au
or Debbie Yee at
